Govt comes under sharp attack on price issue

New Delhi, Dec 8: Government today came under sharp attack on the issue of price rise with the Opposition accusing it of failing to curb inflation and the BJP even asking it to quit if it fails to "find a way out" of the current situation.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj accused the government of pursuing wrong economic policies, while Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) said the seasonal reprieve from inflation should not work as a respite for the government which should aim at brining down inflation in the long term.

Referring to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement 'I don't know where this country is going' made after a man slapped Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Swaraj said it was the duty of the government of the day to find a way out.

"...You find a way. If you cannot, leave the chair and then we will show the way," Swaraj said, winding up her speech on a discussion on inflation.

She blamed "wrong" economic policies and corruption in government behind price rise.

"CAG has exposed six scams worth crores of rupees. 60,000 tonne of foodgrain is rotting in godowns and government has taken a loan of Rs 53,000 crore...the RBI has increased interest rates 13 times...have goodies by taking loan," she said.

At one point, Swaraj and Mukherjee had a brief exchange of words.

Swaraj asked Mukherjee to listen to what she was saying instead of reading documents.

Mukherjee shot back by saying that it was repeat of her old speeches and said he was listening to "every word" she has said while going through the notes.

At this Swaraj said the speech can be changed if the government is able to change in situation, prompting the Finance Minister to say that people know what the BJP did when it was in power.

Swaraj also accused the government of "doling out" figures and statistics when the "hungry actually need food".

Referring to the Cabinet decision on allowing 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail, she said even US President Barack Obama was supporting 'US small business Saturday' where people buy things from small shops.

On the issue of blackmoney, Swaraj said if the money stashed away in bank accounts abroad is brought back, it will help curb inflation.

Dasgupta, who initiated the discussion, said government should work towards increasing agricultural produce if it wanted a long term solution to curb inflation.

"The respite from inflation is seasonal and the government should not be satisfied...the panorama of price rise has not been eliminated," he said.

Terming the government as "rudderless", Dasgupta said the issue of price rise was a "long story of failed promises of a faceless government...government led by eminent economist Manmohan Singh has all along been on the wrong side."

Rewati Raman Singh (SP) said that despite several expert and committees recommended that the inflation should not be more than 6 per cent in any case.

Dara Singh Chauhan (BSP) said the government must do something to contain inflation as the poor people are desperately waiting for situation to improve.

Sharad Yadav (JD) alleged that continuous price rise shows that the government efforts (to contain inflation) are not visible.

"Government is not making serious efforts to contain inflation and instead making policies which are fueling it," Yadav said.

Attacking BJP, Kalyan Banerjee (AITC) said, "You will not come in power by delivering a speech here. You need a mandate for that."

T K S Elangovan (DMK), Basudeb Acharia (CPM), B Mahtab (BJD), Anandrao Adsul (SS) and Supriya Sule (NCP) also participated in the discussion. PTI

The other millions

UN High Commission for Refugees has appealed for urgent reinforcing of the international system that deals with the world's millions of stateless people and forcibly displaced.

UNHCR warned that a succession of political crises and the global economic downturn were contributing to a significantly more challenging environment for protecting people who are forced to flee their homes.

Refugees are not a security threat, but the first victims of insecurity, it said while adding those governments and social and political movements needed to be more courageous in confronting intolerance.

The UN refugee agency was created in December 1950, initially as a response to displacement in Europe in the wake of World War II. The 1951 UN Refugee Convention came about a few months later and has since become one of the most widely accepted international human rights instruments – responsible for saving millions of refugee lives.

UNHCR's work has expanded, meanwhile, to include statelessness and helping some of the millions of internally displaced people. At the start of this year, the global population of refugees, asylum-seekers and people displaced internally by conflict, stood at 43.7 million people. The number of stateless people is harder to determine, but is estimated at 12 million or more.

The High Commissioner called on states to look at ways to strengthen their own protection mechanisms for the displaced and stateless.

Disproportionate burdens for developing countries, who host 80 per cent of the world's refugees; the millions of refugees left stranded in protracted displacement limbo; and the complicating effects of factors such as population growth, food and water insecurity are credited as the reasons why not much have been achieved.

It would take strong political will to arrive to any sort of conclusion given the acute political polarity.

Class distinction is a shame on humanity

Dear Editor,

This refers to the letter written by P Rai and A Kumar that Arunachal is hypocrite and would have been naked like Nicobar Island if Hindi was not used in Arunachal.

They call themselves from developed region. But I totally reject both as wrong. Both congratulate each other as if they have accomplished a heroic deed. But their questions seems not at all tough and complicated one. Their questions deserve answer in the form of following simple and easy questions.

“What is the preferred language for communication among different tribes in Arunachal? How many lakhs of people from outside are making their livelihood in Arunachal? Right answer to this question will prove wrong their claim that “outsiders are threatened in Arunachal”.

“Who are the people preferred by Arunachal in their service particularly in business?  How many Arunachalee people are making their livelihood outside the state? How many of our girl students are molested publicly in your area for silly reason like dress? In which states, politicians consume public money as fodder and in constructing statue of own political party? Which state has the lowest literacy rate in the country?

We the Arunachalees enjoy equality in our society. Rich treat poorest with all dignity. Loving Hindi is not a criterion for becoming nationalist. We should use Hindi as per need based only. If the culture of feudalistic mentality creeps in our society, it will take its toll beyond repair. Class distinction is a shame on humanity although they take pride in it. Even China spotted caste system as softest target to derail India.

Why this silence?

Dear Editor,

Our state saw quite an upheaval in the recent past when the integrity of a community was questioned. The events that followed the remark made in some national daily, to which I guess very few actually had the privilege to read, were never seen before.

To be honest, I supported the movement morally as the tribe I belong to is akin to the tribe that was questioned. But again I am amazed or to say saddened to see how the whole episode subsided dramatically after the induction of the new Chief Minister. I am still wondering if I was right to have supported the movement, though morally. But what amazes me more very agonizingly is the stoic silence, apart from very few brave soul, being shown by the entire state when the integrity of the whole state has been questioned by one Ananth Kumar, that too in our own daily that reaches every nook and corner of the state. Resorting to violence is never the right way and we have seen enough of it, but keeping mum isn't encouraging either.

As for Ananth Kumar, all I have to say is that he just needs to get a bit mature. Chinese claim over Arunachal is a very sensitive and volatile issue that has engulfed the entire state. Every possible effort is being made by the Center, state govt. and student organizations to maintain a cordial relationship so that the issue won't escalate. And commenting on the issue and smacking of double hypocrisy, as claimed by Kumar is very immature. He has made a mockery of the efforts being carried out on India-China issue. In fact, his comments speak ton about what he feels about the Arunachalee i.e., non Indian or Chinese to be precise. We take pride in being an integral part of India and Kumar is no one to question that. Please refrain from such an act in the future.

Yours,

Dingjen Maying

Don’t take the message lightly

Dear Editor,

This is in response to "Love song for concern department" that appeared in your daily of December 8 issue. Honestly the love song touched my emotion and melted my heart.

The love song was neither a joke for entertainment nor an ordinary poem. It carried a meaningful message which our elected leaders and bureaucrats should not take lightly. There are hundreds of educated youths of Arunachal who are victim of frustration.

Yours,

Dedo Ete, Itanagar

Maintain the ATM

Dear Editor,

I would like to draw the attention of the SBI Pasighat authority towards non-functioning of the ATM booths making everyone’s life miserable.

For the past two months the ATM has not been  functioning properly.  Sometimes, the booth surprisingly comes to alive and after a couple of days it again goes to a disgusting deep slumber causing great problem to the people. Last week, when a friend of mine got terribly sick,  I had to manage money from one of my relatives due to non-functioning of the ATM.

Those persons who are assigned to look after the smooth functioning of the machines are not performing their duty properly.

I, therefore, on behalf of the suffering people of Pasighat, appeal to the concern SBI authority to either properly maintain the ATM booth or just throw it to dustbin.

Yours,

Biku Gao

Seeing is believing

Dear Editor,

This is in reference to Ananth Kumar’s letter which was published in your daily on December 5.

His idea and concept regarding the Arunachalee people is very much annoying and deserves criticism from all quarters.

Instead of coming out with constructive ideas that would be helpful in bringing a social change and peaceful coexistence of every section of people he has exposed his typical conservative nature.

Pointing fingers and condemning us will not bring any solution. And yes, why alone Arunachalee?

This state of affairs is practiced in other parts of India too. When we go outside our state we confront the same pain and agony that you have described. We are ragged, harassed, ill-treated and even worse than that. But see the difference, we never complain. This is called attitude. We are known for our simple and peace loving nature.

During my visits to Kolkata, Chennai, Puducherry etc I came across and interacted with many people who were filled with full of admiration and appreciation for our hospitality.

I feel, my learned friend has a poor understanding of our state and her people when he says that they have limited opportunities in Arunachal Pradesh.

In contrary, we provide you the best opportunities here. Not to speak of govt jobs, every business establishments, financial hubs and so and so are run by you people. We are only following your footsteps. Whatever we are today, be it good or bad have mostly been adopted from you.

Regarding purchasing of properties let me make clear that Eastern Bengal Frontier Act of 1872 prohibits outsiders from purchasing any property within the territory of Arunachal Pradesh. This Act was adopted by the British India with a motive to safeguard us from the outsiders. Even the British had a better understanding of us. One cannot judge or draw conclusions about the whole people of a state to be ill-natured. You will find some people to be good and others bad. This stands true not only for Arunachalee but to people of other states too. I think I should finish up here. There are lot to write, lot to discuss over a never ending debate but ultimately it will only leave a negative impact.

In conclusion, I sincerely appeal people from outside our state not to nurture any wrong notions of our people just because of Anant Kumar's writing. You are welcome to our state to know us better and explore the truth that is treasured within us. After all "seeing is believing. "

Yours,

Omin J @ Abuh,

Itanagar

Be grateful

Dear Editor,

The day I read about Ananth Kumar’s take on us, I felt he had bitten more than he could swallow.

The gentleman certainly has not learnt anything from Pradeep Thakurs case. People like Ananth Kumar must be grateful to live and work in Arunachal. Our state is a job haven for outsiders. And that is why they do not want to go back from here.

I wonder what compel him to make such unfounded remarks against Arunachalee people which would not help maintain a cordial relationship between the people of the state and outside the state.

It is known to all that we the people of North East are living a pitiable life in so called mainland India. There have also been numerous reports of sexual harassments and other incidents involving students of North East.

I hope Ananth Kumar and other would think twice before making such derogatory remarks against the Arunachalees.

Yours,

Jony,

RIMS, Imphal
